How is link juice calculated in this tool?
This calculator uses a transparent, PageRank-style formula: Juice = (Page Authority / Outbound Links) x Damping x Position x Relevance. Page Authority on a 0-100 scale sets the starting equity, then dividing by the number of outbound links on the source page splits that value among everything it links to. The damping factor (0.85 by default) applies the natural value loss at each hop, the position weight scales the link by where it sits, and a relevance bonus rewards matching anchor text. Because it relies on values you supply rather than live API data, treat the output as a relative model for comparing opportunities, not an exact metric. Open the Breakdown tab to see every multiplication step for each link, so the math stays fully auditable.
Why does a footer link pass less link juice than an in-content link?
Search engines weight links by placement because boilerplate areas repeat site-wide and carry less editorial intent than a link chosen inside an article. This tool reflects that with position weights: an in-content link keeps 100% of its value, a header keeps 90%, navigation 75%, a sidebar 60%, and a footer just 40%. In practice that makes an in-content link worth roughly 2.5 times a footer link of identical strength, which is why a high-authority link buried in a footer can underperform a modest link inside body copy. Set the correct position for each source in the calculator and the difference appears immediately in the effective juice. It is a fast way to show a client why placement, not just authority, decides how much equity a backlink actually delivers.
Does a nofollow link pass any link juice?
It depends on which theory you believe, and this calculator lets you test all three. The Zero model passes no equity at all, treating nofollow as a hard stop. The Leaked model passes 15% of the value, reflecting the view that some authority still flows through. The Evaporated model treats the juice as lost rather than redirected to your other links, a nod to Google's shift away from classic PageRank sculpting. Switch models in the advanced settings to see how your total received juice changes under each assumption. Since Google now treats rel="nofollow" as a hint rather than a strict directive, modelling the leaked scenario gives a useful middle estimate. Mark each source as dofollow or nofollow, pick a model, and compare the totals to stress-test your link profile.
What is the difference between Page Authority and Domain Authority here?
Page Authority measures the ranking strength of a single specific page, while Domain Authority measures the strength of the whole website it sits on. Link juice flows from the exact page that hosts your link, so this calculator uses Page Authority as the driver of the formula. A link from a powerful homepage on a strong domain can still pass little equity if that particular page is weak or links out to dozens of sites. You can record both metrics on a 0-100 scale for each source, but enter Page Authority from your own backlink data for the most realistic estimate. Domain Authority is captured for context and comparison. Pull both numbers from a backlink tool you already use, then let the calculator rank which links truly deserve your outreach effort.
How many link sources can I model at once and what do the results show?
You can model up to 15 link sources at the same time, each with its own source URL, Page Authority and Domain Authority, outbound link count, dofollow or nofollow status, link position, and anchor text, all pointing at a single target URL with a list of target keywords. Results update in real time across three tabs. The Summary tab shows total link juice received, a strength rating of Strong at 10 or more, Medium at 5 or more, and Weak above 0, plus how many links are dofollow, average Page Authority, and a flow bar per source. The Breakdown tab walks through the full math for every link, and the Guide tab explains the factors. Copy a plain-text summary or export the entire table as a CSV to share or archive your analysis.

About the Link Juice Calculator
The Link Juice Calculator is a free tool for modelling how SEO value flows from backlinks into one of your pages. "Link juice" is the informal name for link equity — the ranking authority that passes along a hyperlink from one page to another. Instead of guessing whether a link is worth chasing, you enter what you know about each source and the calculator estimates the effective juice that actually reaches your target, broken down step by step.
It is built for SEOs, link builders, and site owners who are weighing outreach targets, auditing an existing backlink profile, or trying to explain to a client why a high-authority link buried in a footer is worth less than a modest one inside an article. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, there is no sign-up, and the CSV export and clipboard copy are generated on your own device.
How the calculation works
The estimate follows a transparent formula that mirrors how PageRank-style equity is thought to distribute:
- Juice = (Page Authority / Outbound Links) x Damping x Position x Relevance
Each part reflects a real factor in how authority moves between pages:
- Page Authority is the starting strength of the linking page, on a 0-100 scale. A higher score means more equity to share.
- Outbound Links divides that equity. A page that links out to 100 places passes far less to each target than one that links to five — the juice is split.
- Damping factor applies the natural value loss that happens at each hop. The web standard is 0.85, and you can adjust it between 0.1 and 1 in the advanced settings.
- Position weights the link by where it sits: in-content links keep 100% of value, a header 90%, navigation 75%, a sidebar 60%, and a footer just 40%.
- Relevance adds a 30% bonus when the anchor text matches one of the target keywords you supply.
Nofollow links are handled by a model you choose: "zero" passes no equity, "leaked" passes 15%, and "evaporated" treats the juice as lost rather than redirected — a nod to the long-running debate over how nofollow really behaves.
What you can enter and what it produces
For each source you can record the source URL, its Page Authority and Domain Authority (0-100), the number of outbound links on the page, dofollow or nofollow, the link position, and the exact anchor text. You can model up to 15 link sources at once and set a single target URL plus a list of target keywords.
Results appear in real time across three tabs. The Summary tab shows total link juice received, a strength rating (Strong at 10+, Medium at 5+, Weak above 0), how many links are dofollow, average Page Authority, and a flow bar for each source. The Breakdown tab walks through every multiplication for each link so the math is auditable. The Guide tab explains the factors and position weights. You can copy a plain-text summary or export the full table as a CSV.
Why link position and relevance matter
Two facts surprise people new to link building, and the calculator makes them concrete. First, an in-content link is worth roughly 2.5 times a footer link of the same strength, because content placement carries more weight than boilerplate site-wide links. Second, a link from a strong page that already links out to dozens of sites may pass less juice than a weaker page that links to only a handful — equity is shared, not duplicated.
Because the tool relies on values you supply rather than live API data, treat the numbers as a relative model for comparing opportunities, not an exact metric. Pull Page Authority and outbound counts from your own backlink data, then use the calculator to rank which links deserve your effort.
