How to Convert Area Units (and Why the Acre Is a Rectangle, Not a Square)

Convert between square meters, acres, hectares, square feet, and 19 other area units — and learn why every conversion goes through one base unit, why the acre is 43,560 ft² because of furlongs and chains, and why a bigha in India is not the same number twice.

The problem: area units are squared, and nobody memorizes acre-to-ft²

You have a plot listed at 2.3 acres and a floor plan in square meters. You need one number in the other unit, and the conversion factor isn't on the tip of your tongue — because area factors are the linear factor squared, and nobody squares 3.281 in their head to get 10.764. The honest move is a tool that stores the factors and does the one multiplication and one division for you. The interesting part is what the factors actually are, why the acre is the shape it is, and which regional unit will silently give you the wrong answer.

The tool converts through square meters as the base unit — every unit has a toBase factor (acres → 4,046.856 m², hectares → 10,000 m², ft² → 0.0929 m²) and the conversion is value × fromBase ÷ toBase. One multiplication, one division, and the result is exact to the precision you set. The rest of this guide is what the 23 units actually are, which ones have traps, and why the room calculator has a square root in it.

The substance: one base unit, 23 factors, five categories

The base unit and the two-step conversion

Square meters (m²) are the base. The tool stores a single factor per unit — the number you multiply by to get m² — and every conversion is value × fromFactor ÷ toFactor. There's no memorized acre-to-square-feet constant; the tool goes acre → m² → ft², and because both factors are exact (acre = 4,046.8564224, ft² = 0.09290304), the intermediate rounding is negligible. This is why a converter with a base unit beats a lookup table: 23 units need 23 factors, not 23 × 22 = 506 pairwise constants.

The 23 units split into five categories:

The acre is a rectangle

1 acre = 43,560 ft². That number is not round because the acre was defined as one furlong (660 ft) by one chain (66 ft) — a rectangle, 10 chains wide, from medieval English plowing. A square acre is ~208.7 ft on a side, but the acre was never a square; it was the strip of land one ox team could plow in a day. The 43,560 is 660 × 66, and every US property line drawn in acres inherits that shape.

1 hectare = 10,000 m² (a square, 100 m × 100 m). The factor to remember is 1 ha = 2.471 acres — hectares are roughly two-and-a-half times bigger. A 10-acre plot is ~4 ha. The tool gives you the exact 2.47105; the 2.5 mental shortcut is close enough for eyeballing.

1 square mile = 640 acres — the US Public Land Survey System divided land into 6×6-mile townships, each 36 square miles, each square mile a "section" of 640 acres. That's why farmland in the US Midwest comes in 40, 80, 160, 320 acre parcels — fractions of a section.

The regional units trap

The tool ships six regional units, and two of them have a trap you need to know about.

Bigha (India) — the tool uses 2,508.38 m². In reality, bigha varies by state: ~680 m² in some parts of Assam, ~1,338 m² in Uttar Pradesh, ~2,508 m² in Rajasthan, ~14,400 m² in parts of Bihar. A bigha in one Indian state can be 20× a bigha in another. If you're reading an Indian land deed, confirm which state's bigha before you convert. The tool's value is the most commonly cited one, but it's not universal.

Tsubo (Japan), pyeong (Korea), ping (Taiwan) — these are the same unit: ~3.306 m² (defined as 2 boards of 1.653 m²). The tool gives all three the same toBase of 3.30579. If you're converting across East Asian property records, the number is consistent — the name changes, the area doesn't.

Rai (Thailand) = 1,600 m² (a square, 40 m × 40 m). 1 rai = 4 ngaan = 400 square wa. Stable, no trap.

Gaj (India) = ~0.836 m² — the same as a square yard, used in North Indian real estate for small plots. 1 gaj = 9 ft².

The room calculator and the square root

The tool has a Room / Land Area calculator: type length and width, get area. The subtle part is that area units are squared, so the linear conversion factor is the square root of the area factor. 1 m² = 10.764 ft², so 1 m = √10.764 = 3.281 ft. The tool does this correctly — it takes Math.sqrt(baseUnit.toBase) as the linear factor and computes area = l × w × linearFactor². You type 10 × 8 in meters, it gives you 80 m², 861.1 ft², 0.0198 acres. The math is right because the square root undoes the squaring; a naive converter that used the area factor directly for length would be off by √10.764 = 3.28×.

The scientific units

The barn (b) = 10⁻²⁸ m² — used in nuclear physics for cross-sectional area (the probability of a particle interaction). Named because hitting a uranium nucleus was "as easy as hitting the side of a barn" — the unit is enormous compared to a nucleus, so the name is physicist humor. A circular mil (cmil) = 5.067×10⁻¹⁰ m² — the area of a circle with diameter 0.001 inch, used for wire gauges in US electrical work. Both are in the tool's Scientific category; you'll hit them only in specialized contexts.

Gotchas

  • Bigha varies by Indian state. The tool uses 2,508 m² (Rajasthan/common). Assam's bigha is ~680 m², Bihar's can be ~14,400 m². Confirm the state before you convert an Indian deed.
  • The acre is 43,560 ft² exactly, but it's not a square. It's a furlong × a chain (660 × 66). If you're estimating dimensions, a square acre is ~208.7 ft per side, but real plots are rarely square.
  • Hectare-to-acre: remember 2.471, not 2.5. The 2.5 shortcut is off by 1.2% — fine for eyeballing, wrong for a contract. The tool gives 2.47105.
  • Square nautical miles are for sea, not land. 1 nmi² = 3,429,904 m² — bigger than a square mile (2.59 km²) because a nautical mile is 1,852 m vs a statute mile's 1,609 m. Don't mix them.
  • The are (a) = 100 m² is mostly obsolete. Hectares (100 ares) replaced it for land. You'll see it in old European records; the tool keeps it for completeness.
  • Section = 640 acres = 1 sq mile exactly. The US Public Land Survey is consistent; if a deed says "the NW¼ of section 14," that's 160 acres, a quarter of a quarter township. The tool won't parse that for you, but the math is 640 ÷ 4 ÷ 4.
  • Precision past 8 decimals is noise. The tool offers up to 10. The factors are exact to 7-8 significant figures; beyond that you're formatting floating-point error, not real precision. Use 4-6 for any practical work.
  • The room calculator assumes the unit's linear counterpart. Pick m², type 10 × 8, and it treats those as meters. Pick ft², type 10 × 8, and it treats those as feet. The dropdown label says the area unit; the inputs are the linear version. This is correct but can trip you up if you expect the unit dropdown to match the inputs.

Summary

  • Area conversion is one multiplication and one division through a base unit (m²). The tool stores 23 factors, not 506 pairwise constants. value × fromFactor ÷ toFactor — exact, fast, and the only formula you need.
