How to Resize Images for Social Media (and Why the Platform Dimensions Are the Easy Part, the Crop Is the Hard Part)

Resizing an image for social media is not one operation. It is two. The first is scaling the image to the platform's required dimensions. The second is cropping the image to the platform's required aspect ratio. The two are different, and the second is the one that ruins photos. The dimensions are published numbers — Instagram square post is 1080 by 1080, portrait is 1080 by 1350, story is 1080 by 1920, Twitter post is 1200 by 675, Facebook link preview is 1200 by 630, LinkedIn post is 1200 by 627, YouTube thumbnail is 1280 by 720. The aspect ratios follow from these dimensions — 1:1, 4:5, 9:16, 16:9, 1.91:1. The numbers are the easy part. The crop is the hard part. Your photo is rarely the right aspect ratio to begin with, and the crop takes things out of the frame. A landscape photo cropped to Instagram's 4:5 portrait cuts off the sides. A portrait photo cropped to Twitter's 16:9 landscape cuts off the top and bottom. A photo with a face near the top cropped to a Facebook cover cuts off the face. The crop is where photos die, and the crop is the decision the resizer makes for you when you do not tell it otherwise. The problem: the dimensions are numbers, the crop is a decision

Social media platforms require images at specific dimensions. Instagram wants 1080 by 1080 for a square post. Twitter wants 1200 by 675 for a post image. Facebook wants 1200 by 630 for a link preview. These numbers are published, and they are the easy part of resizing for social. You look them up, you pick the preset, you resize.

The hard part is the crop. Your photo is almost never the right aspect ratio to begin with. A photo from a phone is usually 4:3 or 3:4 (4032 by 3024, or 3024 by 4032). A photo from a camera is usually 3:2 (6000 by 4000). A screenshot is whatever the screen was. None of these match the platform's required ratio. To fit the platform's dimensions, the resizer has to either stretch the image (which distorts it and looks wrong), letterbox it (which leaves bars on the sides and looks unprofessional), or crop it (which removes part of the image and may cut off the subject).

Stretching is never right. Letterboxing is rarely right. Cropping is the answer, and cropping is a decision. The decision is which part of the image to keep. A 3:2 landscape photo cropped to Instagram's 4:5 portrait loses the left and right edges. If the subject is in the center, the crop is fine. If the subject is on the left, the crop cuts it off. A 4:5 portrait cropped to Twitter's 16:9 landscape loses the top and bottom. If the subject's face is in the top third, the crop cuts off the head. The resizer has to decide what to keep, and if you do not tell it, it will keep the center, which is wrong about half the time.

The seven platforms, and what each wants

The presets are published numbers. Knowing what each platform wants, and why, is the first step.

Instagram has four post shapes and one story shape. The square post (1080 by 1080, 1:1) is the original. The portrait post (1080 by 1350, 4:5) is taller than square and takes more screen real estate on the feed — Instagram rewards taller images with more visibility, so portrait is now the most common shape for feed posts. The landscape post (1080 by 566, 1.91:1) is for wide images, but it shows up small in the feed. The story and reel (1080 by 1920, 9:16) is full-screen vertical, designed for phone holding. The profile picture (320 by 320) is a small circle.

Twitter/X has a post image (1200 by 675, 16:9) that shows as a 16:9 card in the timeline. The header (1500 by 500, 3:1) is a wide banner. The profile picture (400 by 400, 1:1) is a small circle. The in-stream photo (1600 by 900) is for large image posts.

Facebook has a post image (1200 by 630, 1.91:1) that appears as the link preview when you share a URL. The cover photo (820 by 312) is a wide banner for a personal or business profile. The profile picture (180 by 180) is a small circle. The event cover (1920 by 1005) is for Facebook events. The story (1080 by 1920, 9:16) is full-screen vertical, like Instagram's.

LinkedIn has a post image (1200 by 627, 1.91:1) similar to Facebook's link preview. The cover photo (1584 by 396, 4:1) is a wide banner for a personal profile. The profile picture (400 by 400) is a circle. The company logo (300 by 300) is a square for business pages.

YouTube has a thumbnail (1280 by 720, 16:9) that is the standard video preview. The channel art (2560 by 1440) is a wide banner, but YouTube crops it differently on different devices — the safe area is roughly 1546 by 423 in the center. The profile picture (800 by 800) is a circle.

TikTok has a video cover and a thumbnail (both 1080 by 1920, 9:16) for full-screen vertical content, and a profile picture (200 by 200) that is a circle.

Pinterest has pins in three aspect ratios: standard (1000 by 1500, 2:3), square (1000 by 1000, 1:1), and long (1000 by 2100, roughly 2:5). The standard pin is the most common and gets the most engagement. The board cover (222 by 150) and profile picture (165 by 165) are smaller secondary placements.

Why cover-crop is the only mode that works

There are three ways to fit an image into a target rectangle: stretch, contain (letterbox), and cover (crop). Each has a problem.

Stretch resizes the image to the target dimensions without preserving the aspect ratio. A 4:3 image stretched to 16:9 becomes wider and shorter, with everything in it looking horizontally elongated. Faces look stretched. Text looks stretched. Stretching is never right for a photo.

Contain scales the image to fit inside the target rectangle, preserving the aspect ratio, and fills the empty space with bars (letterboxing on the top and bottom, pillarboxing on the sides). The image is undistorted, but it does not fill the frame, and the bars look unprofessional on a feed. A square image contained in a 16:9 frame has black bars on the left and right, and the platform's feed renders it as a small square with bars — it looks broken.

Cover scales the image to fill the target rectangle completely, preserving the aspect ratio, and crops the overflow. The image fills the frame, the aspect ratio is preserved, and the crop takes whatever is outside the rectangle. This is the only mode that produces a result that looks native on the platform. Every social media platform renders cover-cropped images as full-size, full-bleed posts. The cost is the crop — you lose part of the image.

The focal point, and why it matters more than the dimensions

The focal point is a coordinate on the image that tells the resizer which part to keep when the crop takes the rest. The default is the center (50%, 50%). For a portrait-orientation image cropped to a landscape aspect ratio, the center crop keeps the middle horizontal strip and cuts off the top and bottom. If the subject's face is in the top third, the center crop cuts off the head.

The fix is to move the focal point. Setting the focal point to the top (50%, 0%) keeps the top of the image and crops the bottom. Setting it to the bottom (50%, 100%) keeps the bottom and crops the top. Setting it off-center horizontally (25%, 50%) keeps the left side and crops the right.

The math is: scale the image to cover the target, compute the overflow on the long dimension, and offset the image so the focal point is proportionally positioned within the target.

The focal point matters more than the dimensions because the dimensions are fixed — Instagram is 1080 by 1080, Twitter is 1200 by 675, the numbers do not change. The focal point is the one decision you make per image, and it is the one that determines whether the subject survives the crop. Always set it. The default center crop is right for a centered subject and wrong for everything else.

JPEG, PNG, and WebP, and when each is right

The format choice is about the content of the image, not the platform. All three formats are accepted by all major platforms.

JPEG is lossy and small. It is the right choice for photographs — natural scenes, gradients, faces, anything where the eye does not notice the compression artifacts. A JPEG at 85% quality is 5 to 10 times smaller than the equivalent PNG and looks identical on a phone screen. Use JPEG for any photo that will go on a feed.

PNG is lossless and large. It is the right choice for images with sharp edges, text, flat colors, or transparency — a screenshot, a graphic with a logo, a chart, a quote card. PNG preserves every pixel exactly, which means text and lines stay sharp. JPEG introduces block artifacts around text at any quality setting, which is visible when you zoom in.

WebP is the modern format. It is lossy or lossless, and it produces smaller files than both JPEG and PNG at equivalent quality. The catch is support — all modern browsers and platforms support WebP now, but some older tools do not. If you are uploading to a platform that accepts WebP (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook all do), WebP is the best choice for size.

Why the transparency becomes white

The resizer paints a white background on the canvas before drawing the image. This is a deliberate choice — without it, transparent regions in the source image would render as black on the canvas (the canvas's default is transparent, but most image encoders render transparency as black when there is no alpha channel, like JPEG). The white background ensures the output looks reasonable on a white-background platform.

The cost is that transparency is lost. A source PNG with an alpha channel (a logo on a transparent background, a product photo with the background removed) will have white where the transparency was, even if the output format is PNG. There is no option to preserve transparency.

If you need transparency in the output — a logo, a sticker, a PNG overlay — you need a different tool. The Image Resizer (the general one, not the social media one) preserves transparency. The Image Format Converter does too. Use those for transparent output.

Why EXIF orientation can produce a rotated result

Mobile phones shoot photos in landscape orientation and tag the image with an EXIF orientation flag that tells the viewer to rotate the image for display. A portrait photo from a phone is stored as a landscape image with a flag that says "rotate 90 degrees clockwise for display." Most image viewers and social media platforms read the flag and display the photo correctly.

A resizer that does not read the EXIF flag will draw the photo in landscape, then the platform will display the resized landscape photo — which now has the subject on its side. The fix is for the resizer to read the EXIF orientation and apply the rotation before drawing. The Social Media Image Resizer uses the browser's native Image element, which on most modern browsers reads the EXIF orientation automatically. On older browsers or some edge cases, the orientation may not be applied, and the result may be rotated.

If your resized image comes out rotated, the cause is usually EXIF orientation. The fix is to open the original image in a photo app, let the app re-save it with the orientation baked in (not as a flag), and resize that.

Gotchas

  • Cover-crop is the only mode. The tool always crops to fill the target. There is no contain (letterbox) or stretch mode. If your image's aspect ratio is very different from the target's, the crop will be aggressive. Set the focal point to control what is kept.
  • Transparency becomes white. The tool paints a white background before drawing, so any transparent regions in a source PNG become white in the output. This is true even when the output format is PNG. Use a different tool for transparent output.
  • The default focal point is the center. For images with a subject off-center, the center crop will cut the subject. Always click on the image to set the focal point before resizing.
  • EXIF orientation may not be applied. The tool uses the browser's native Image element, which reads EXIF orientation on most modern browsers but not all. If the result is rotated, re-save the image with the orientation baked in.
  • No safe zones for text. The tool does not show the safe zone — the area where text will not be cut off by the platform's UI overlays. Instagram's 4:5 portrait post has a 250-pixel area at the top where the username and the three-dot menu overlay sit; text in that area is covered. Facebook's cover photo has the profile picture and name overlay on the bottom left. YouTube's channel art is cropped to different sizes on different devices, and only the central 1546 by 423 is safe. The tool does not warn about any of these.
  • No file size enforcement. The tool does not check the output file size against the platform's limits. Instagram's image limit is 30 MB, Twitter's is 5 MB, LinkedIn's is 5 MB. A large PNG at 2560 by 1440 (YouTube channel art) can easily exceed 5 MB. Pick JPEG or WebP for large outputs.
  • No profile-picture circular preview. Profile pictures display as circles on every platform, but the tool outputs a square. The circle crop happens on the platform, and any part of the image near the corners is cut off. Keep the subject in the center of a profile picture.
  • Only one platform and one size at a time. The tool converts to a single preset per run. If you need the same image at three sizes (Instagram square, Instagram story, Twitter post), you have to run the tool three times. Switching platform or size discards previous results.
  • No ZIP download. The batch mode processes multiple images to the same preset, but the download is one file at a time, with 100-millisecond delays between downloads. Browsers may block rapid sequential downloads. There is no ZIP option.
  • PNG quality slider has no effect. The quality slider is only shown for JPEG and WebP. PNG always encodes at full quality, which means PNG output can be very large.
  • The "processing" indicator is dead UI. The tool has a "processing" status that is never actually set — processing is synchronous and completes before the indicator can render. For large batches, the UI will freeze with no progress feedback.
  • No Web Worker. All processing is on the main thread. A batch of ten large images will block the UI for several seconds. For large batches, use a command-line tool.
  • No max file size or max dimensions guard. Very large source images can exceed the browser's canvas size limit (which varies — roughly 16384 pixels in Chrome, smaller in Safari). A source image larger than the canvas limit will fail silently.

Summary

  • Resizing for social media is two operations: scaling to the platform's dimensions and cropping to the platform's aspect ratio.
