How is GPA calculated from grades and credit hours?
GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a simple average of your grades. Each course's letter grade is converted to grade points (on a 4.0 scale, A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, and so on), then multiplied by that course's credit hours. You add up all those products to get total quality points, then divide by the total credits attempted. Because of the weighting, a 4-credit course moves your average twice as much as a 2-credit one, so a strong grade in a heavy course counts more than the same grade in a light one. Doing this by hand across many classes is error-prone, especially with mixed credit values. Enter each course's grade and credits in the calculator and it applies this formula automatically, returning your GPA instantly.
What is the difference between a semester GPA and a cumulative GPA?
A semester GPA reflects only the courses taken in a single term, while a cumulative GPA averages every course across all terms, weighted by credit hours. Your semester GPA can swing widely from one term to the next, but the cumulative figure changes more slowly because it carries the weight of every credit you have already earned. That is why one rough semester hurts less once you have many credits behind you, and why early grades have an outsized long-term effect. This tool reports both: a semester GPA for each term you add and a running cumulative total across all of them. You can also enter prior credits and an existing GPA from a transfer or earlier years, and it folds those into the cumulative result so the number matches your full transcript.
How do I convert a CGPA or percentage to a 4.0 GPA scale?
Different institutions report grades on different scales, so converting requires mapping your grades onto the target scale rather than using one universal formula. This calculator includes eight scales: the US 4.0 scale, a 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades, a 4.3 scale, a 5.0 scale, the 10.0 scale used for Indian CGPA, a straight 0-100 percentage scale, the UK honours classification, and a Canadian scale. Pick the scale your institution actually uses and the grade options update to match it, so a 10-point CGPA or a percentage is interpreted correctly instead of being forced into 4.0 assumptions. A built-in letter-to-percentage reference table also shows typical bands, such as an A being roughly 93-96% on the US scale. Select your scale, enter your grades, and read the resulting GPA directly.
Why can a weighted GPA be higher than 4.0?
A standard unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 because an A is worth exactly 4.0 grade points. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder courses, which is why it can climb above 4.0. In this calculator, turning on the weighted GPA toggle adds 0.5 to each Honors course's points and 1.0 to each AP or IB course's points before averaging, rewarding students who take a more demanding course load. So a student with straight As in several AP classes can finish with a weighted GPA above 4.0, while their unweighted GPA stays at 4.0. Keep in mind many colleges recalculate an unweighted GPA from your transcript anyway, so it helps to know both numbers. Leave the toggle off for the standard average, or switch it on to see how advanced coursework lifts your weighted figure.
What GPA do I need this semester to reach my target?
Reaching a target GPA depends on how many credits you have already completed and how many remain, because each new credit can only shift your cumulative average so far. The math works backward from your goal: it figures out the total quality points you still need, subtracts what you already have, and divides by your remaining credits to find the average grade required. This calculator's Target GPA tool does exactly that. Enter the GPA you want and the number of credits left, and it tells you the average grade you would need across those credits, and it flags when a target has become mathematically unreachable. There is also a What-If simulator that lets you change a grade hypothetically and watch your projected cumulative GPA update, so you can plan retakes or course loads before committing to them.

About the GPA Calculator
The GPA Calculator works out your Grade Point Average from the courses you enter — one semester at a time and as a running cumulative total. Add each class with its name, grade, and credit hours, and the tool converts every grade to points, weights it by credits, and reports a GPA you can rely on for a transcript, a scholarship application, or a quick reality check before finals. It is built for students tracking their own progress, parents helping a teenager plan, and anyone moving between grading systems who needs the same numbers expressed on a familiar scale.
Everything runs in your browser. Grades, course names, and any prior totals you type stay on your device — nothing is uploaded to a server, and there is no sign-up. Your entries are saved to your browser's local storage so the calculator reopens where you left it, and you can clear it whenever you like.
What the calculator computes
GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points: each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, those products are added up, and the total is divided by the total credits attempted. A course worth 4 credits therefore moves your average twice as much as a 2-credit one. The calculator handles this automatically and produces:
- Semester GPA for each term you add, plus a cumulative GPA across all of them.
- Prior credits support — enter an existing GPA and credit total (from a transfer or earlier years) and it folds into the cumulative figure.
- Academic standing labels mapped to common thresholds: Good Standing at 2.0, Dean's List and Cum Laude around 3.5, Magna Cum Laude at 3.7, and Academic Warning or Probation below 2.0.
- A grade distribution view and a letter-to-percentage reference table (for example, an A is typically 93–96% and a B is 83–86% on the US scale).
Grading scales and weighted GPA
Not every school uses the same numbers, so the calculator includes eight scales: the US 4.0 scale (A–F), the 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades, a 4.3 scale where an A+ is 4.3, a 5.0 scale, a 10.0 scale used for Indian CGPA, a straight 0–100 percentage scale, the UK honours classification, and a Canadian scale. Pick the one your institution uses and the grade options update to match.
There is also a weighted GPA toggle for high schoolers taking advanced courses. When enabled, Honors classes add 0.5 and AP or IB classes add 1.0 to each grade's points before averaging, which is why a weighted GPA can climb above 4.0. Leave it off for the standard unweighted average most colleges recalculate from anyway.
Planning ahead: target and what-if tools
Beyond reporting where you stand, the calculator helps you decide what to do next:
- Target GPA — set the GPA you want and the number of credits left, and it tells you the average grade you would need across those credits to get there, flagging when a target is no longer mathematically reachable.
- What-If simulator — change a grade hypothetically and watch the projected cumulative GPA update, so you can see how much one course actually moves the needle before you commit to a retake or a heavier course load.
- History snapshots — save up to ten versions of your calculation to compare scenarios side by side.
Saving and sharing your results
When you have the numbers you want, copy a clean text summary to your clipboard or export it as a transcript-summary text file listing your courses, semester GPAs, cumulative GPA, and standing. Because the calculator is fully responsive and stores data locally, you can build out a full multi-year transcript on a laptop and reopen the same figures on your phone's browser — no account, no installation, and no grades leaving your device.
