Yes, and it is wrong at both ends. A one-year-old dog is closer to a 15-year-old human than a 7-year-old — dogs reach sexual and skeletal maturity in their first year. At the other end it understates ageing in large breeds and overstates it in small ones. The calculator shows the ×7 figure only so you can see the size of the error.

Adult weight is the strongest single predictor of how fast a dog ages after maturity. A Great Dane is geriatric at 7; a Chihuahua of the same age is middle-aged. The first two years are similar across sizes, so the size band only starts applying from year three: +4 human years per year for small dogs, up to +7 for giant breeds.

A 2020 UC San Diego study compared DNA methylation — chemical marks on DNA that accumulate with age — in dogs and humans, and fitted the relationship as 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It was derived from Labrador Retrievers, so it is least reliable for very small or very large breeds, but it is the first estimate grounded in biology rather than observation.

A vet can estimate from teeth wear, eye clarity, coat condition and muscle tone, usually to within a year or two for an adult. Enter that estimate here — the conversion is only as good as the age you start from.

Roughly when the human-equivalent age passes 60. For a small dog that is around 11 years old; for a giant breed it can be as early as 6. That is usually the point at which vets suggest moving from annual to twice-yearly check-ups.
