How the calculation works
bricks per ft² = 144 ÷ ((face width + joint) × (face height + joint)); bricks = area × that, plus waste
The result depends on a few standard constants, which are stated on the page rather than hidden:
- A standard modular brick with a ⅜ in joint works out at 6.86 bricks per ft² — the figure published in masonry tables.
- Counts are for a single wythe (one brick thick). Double the figure for a two-wythe wall.
- About one 80 lb bag of mortar per 125 bricks.
- Openings for doors and windows are not deducted.
- 10% waste suits a running bond; allow 15% or more for herringbone or a curved edge, which produces far more cuts.
- Edge restraint is the full perimeter — subtract any side that meets an existing wall.
- A 1 in bedding sand layer is standard over a compacted gravel base.
Getting an accurate estimate
Measure twice. Small errors in a linear dimension compound, because material volume scales with two or three of them at once — a 6-inch error across a 20-foot run is over a cubic foot of material on a 4-inch pour.
Keep the waste allowance. The default is deliberately conservative: offcuts, spillage, uneven sub-base and breakage are all real, and running short mid-job usually costs more in a second delivery than the surplus did.
Round up when you order. Suppliers sell in fixed increments — quarter yards, whole bags, full boxes — so treat the figure here as the minimum you need rather than the exact amount to buy.
