What is the difference between total value and total invested in a crypto portfolio?

Total value is what your coins are worth right now: for each holding the tracker multiplies the live CoinGecko price by the amount you own, then adds every position together. Total invested is what you originally paid: the sum of buy price times amount across only the coins where you entered a buy price. Coins added without a buy price still count toward total value but are excluded from total invested, since the tool has no cost basis for them. The gap between the two figures is your unrealized profit or loss. This is why a portfolio can show a large total value but a blank or partial invested figure if you skipped some buy prices. Enter a buy price for each coin above to make both numbers complete and see an accurate gain or loss.

How is unrealized profit and loss calculated for my holdings?

Unrealized P&L is your gain or loss on paper, before you actually sell anything. For each coin the tracker takes the current value (live price times amount) and subtracts the amount invested (buy price times amount), giving you a dollar figure and a percentage. The percentage is that dollar P&L divided by the amount invested, times 100. At the portfolio level, Total P&L is the sum of current value minus total invested across all priced holdings, shown in green when positive and red when negative. Because it is unrealized, the number changes every time prices move and only reflects a sale if you were to close the position at the current spot price. It also only appears once you have recorded at least one buy price. Add your buy prices above to watch live P&L update with each refresh.

Why does a coin show N/A instead of a price?

An N/A appears when the tracker cannot find a live price for that coin on CoinGecko. About twenty common tickers, including BTC, ETH, SOL, BNB, ADA, XRP, DOGE, and LTC, are mapped to their exact CoinGecko IDs automatically. For any other coin, the tool guesses the ID from the name you typed by lowercasing it and replacing spaces with hyphens. If that guess does not match a real CoinGecko entry, or the coin simply is not listed there, the price lookup returns nothing and the row shows N/A rather than inventing a number. To fix it, try entering the coin's full official name exactly as CoinGecko lists it, since the name is what drives the fallback match. Re-add the holding with the correct name above and refresh to pull a valid live price.

How accurate are the prices in this crypto portfolio tracker?

The prices come directly from CoinGecko's public price API, which aggregates market data across many exchanges into a single US-dollar quote per coin. That makes them a reliable, close estimate of fair market value, well suited to checking what a buy-and-hold position is worth. They are not a live trading feed, however, so the figure you see is a recent market reference rather than the exact price you would get filling an order on a specific exchange at that instant. Prices only update when you add a coin or press Refresh, not continuously, so for fast-moving markets refresh before reading the totals. For long-term tracking this level of accuracy is more than enough. Add your coins above and hit Refresh whenever you want the latest quotes for an up-to-date portfolio value.

How do I export my crypto portfolio to a spreadsheet?

Once you have added at least one holding, use the CSV button above the holdings table to download your entire portfolio as a spreadsheet-ready file named crypto-portfolio.csv. The export includes eight columns for every position: coin, symbol, amount, buy price, current price, value, P&L in dollars, and P&L as a percentage. You can open it directly in Excel, Google Sheets, or any tool that reads CSV, then sort, chart, or archive it however you like. Exporting is also the safe way to keep a permanent record, because your portfolio is stored only in your browser's local storage, clearing browser data or switching devices wipes it. Saving a CSV first preserves everything. Build your holdings list above, then click CSV to download a clean snapshot of your positions and profit or loss.

About the Crypto Portfolio Tracker

The Crypto Portfolio Tracker is a free tool for keeping tabs on what your cryptocurrency holdings are worth right now. Add each coin you own — Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, or anything else listed on CoinGecko — and the tracker pulls the current US-dollar price, multiplies it by your amount, and shows your total portfolio value at a glance. If you also enter what you paid, it works out your profit or loss in both dollars and percent. It's built for hobby investors and long-term holders who want a quick, honest number without handing their wallet over to an exchange dashboard or a tracking app.

Your portfolio lives only in your own browser. Each holding you add is saved to local storage on your device, so it's still there when you come back, but it is never sent to or stored on any server. The only outbound request the tracker makes is to CoinGecko's public price API to look up the latest quote — your amounts, your buy prices, and your overall balance stay private to you. There is no sign-up, no wallet connection, and nothing to install.

How to track a holding

Each coin needs three things: a name (e.g. Bitcoin), a ticker symbol (e.g. BTC), and the amount you hold. The buy price in USD is optional — leave it blank if you only want to track current value rather than profit. When you add a coin, the tracker fetches its live price immediately. Common tickers like BTC, ETH, SOL, BNB, ADA, XRP, DOGE, and about a dozen more are mapped to their CoinGecko IDs automatically; for less common coins it matches on the name you typed. If a price can't be found, that row simply shows N/A instead of guessing.

Once coins are added you can:

  • Refresh all prices at once to re-pull the latest quotes from CoinGecko.
  • Delete any holding you no longer want to track.
  • Export to CSV — a spreadsheet-ready file with coin, symbol, amount, buy price, current price, value, P&L in dollars, and P&L in percent for every position.

What the numbers mean

Three summary cards sit at the top once you have at least one holding:

  • Total Portfolio Value — the sum of every coin's current price multiplied by the amount you hold.
  • Total Invested — the sum of (buy price × amount) across the coins where you entered a buy price. Coins with no buy price don't count toward this figure.
  • Total P&L — your unrealized gain or loss, shown in green when positive and red when negative. It's the difference between current value and total invested, so it only appears once you've recorded at least one buy price.

Each row also breaks out its own per-coin P&L in dollars and as a percentage, so you can see which positions are carrying the portfolio and which are dragging it down.

Why a lightweight tracker helps

Prices for major coins can swing several percent in a single day, and once you hold more than two or three assets the mental math of "what's all of this worth?" gets tedious. A simple tracker answers that in seconds and removes the temptation to log into a trading account just to peek. Because the calculation is plain arithmetic on live spot prices, it suits checking a buy-and-hold position rather than chasing minute-by-minute moves.

A couple of things worth knowing: the prices reflect CoinGecko's market data and are not a live trading feed, so treat them as a close estimate rather than an execution price. And because everything is stored locally, clearing your browser data or switching devices will clear the portfolio — export a CSV first if you want a permanent record. Add your first coin above to see your total value and P&L update right away.
