A pint in London is not a pint in Chicago
Order "a pint" in Chicago and you get 473 mL. Order one in London and you get 568 mL — 20% more beer, same word. The US and the UK never agreed on what a pint, cup, gallon, or fluid ounce is, and the disagreement doesn't point the same way every time. A UK pint is bigger; a UK fluid ounce is smaller. You can't fix it with one multiplier.
The Volume Converter handles 31 units across six families, all funnelled through the liter. The conversion is the easy part. The interesting part is the three traps: the US-vs-UK split where the direction reverses, the cubic units defined to equal metric ones, and a UK tablespoon value 18% too big for any modern recipe.
The liter is the hub
Every unit stores a toBase factor in liters. To convert A → B, the tool multiplies by A's factor, divides by B's. Six families, 31 units:
- Metric (7): µL, mL, cL, dL, L, kL, ML
- US liquid (5): fl oz, cup, pt, qt, gal
- UK imperial (5): fl oz UK, cup UK, pt UK, qt UK, gal UK
- Cooking (4): tbsp, tsp, tbsp UK, tsp UK
- Cubic (7): mm³, cm³, dm³, m³, in³, ft³, yd³
- Industrial (3): oil barrel (158.987 L), beer barrel (117.348 L), 55-gal drum (208.198 L)
No unit converts to another directly — they all route through liters — so a two-step (bbl → UK gal) is as accurate as a one-step (mL → L).
The US-vs-UK trap, and the reversal
Same names, different sizes, and the sign flips:

The pint, cup, and gallon are ~20% bigger in the UK; the fluid ounce goes the other way — the UK fl oz is ~4% smaller. The reason: a UK pint is 20 UK fl oz, a US pint is 16 US fl oz. The UK pint is bigger both because its fl oz is slightly smaller and because there are more of them. The two effects compound for the pint and cancel for the fl oz.
Practical consequence: a US recipe's "1 cup" makes ~20% less than a UK cook assumes. Pick the system before you type, or you'll be off by 20%.
The cubic identity is a definition, not a coincidence
The cubic family overlaps the metric family by exact definition:
- 1 cm³ = 1 mL exactly — the milliliter is defined as a cubic centimeter.
- 1 dm³ = 1 L exactly — the liter is defined as a cubic decimeter.
- 1 m³ = 1,000 L exactly.
The tool labels these (cm³ shows "= 1 mL", dm³ shows "= 1 L"). Converting 500 cm³ → mL isn't an approximation — it's the same volume two ways. Only non-metric cubics carry real factors: 1 ft³ = 28.317 L, 1 in³ = 16.387 mL.
The tablespoon that's 18% off
The tool's UK tablespoon = 17.758 mL — the historical imperial tbsp (0.625 UK fl oz). Modern UK, Australian, and Canadian recipes use a metric tablespoon = 15 mL exactly. A recipe written this century almost certainly means 15 mL; the tool gives you 17.758 — 18% too much salt or flour. The US tbsp (14.7868 mL) is fine; the UK tbsp is the one to watch. If the recipe is post-1960s British, convert by hand or pick metric.
The teaspoons are consistent: US tsp = 4.9289 mL, UK tsp = 5.919 mL (each 1/3 of its tbsp). The 3:1 ratio holds in both systems.
The cooking helper has a silent US bias
The Volume → Weight panel takes your volume and an ingredient, returns grams. Its bridge is cups = (liters × 1000) / 236.588 — hardcoded to the US cup — and tbsp = (liters × 1000) / 14.787 — hardcoded to the US tbsp. If your fromUnit is UK cups, the converter above uses 284.131 mL per cup, but the ingredient helper divides by 236.588. "1 UK cup of flour" reports the weight of 1 US cup — ~17% light. The tool distinguishes US and UK everywhere except here. For UK recipes, convert to US cups first.
Gotchas
- Precision 4 loses small volumes in liters. 1 tsp = 0.0049289 L shows
0.0049at the default 4 decimals — a 1.8% round. Bump to 6, or convert to mL (4.9289, clean). - The recipe scaler produces ugly decimals. 3 → 7 servings is a 2.333× factor; "2 cups" becomes
4.667 cups. The tool doesn't round to a friendly fraction. - The ingredient helper is US-only at the bridge. Volume→weight uses 236.588 mL/cup regardless of
fromUnit. UK cups read as US. - Three different "barrels." Petroleum bbl = 42 US gal, beer bbl = 31 US gal, the 55-gal drum is its own entry. Don't grab "bbl" for a 55-gallon drum.
Summary
